In these times of lockdown I have seen a lot of people on social media asking of ways to organise their vinyl record collection. I guess there is no right or wrong way of organising your vinyl collection and perhaps over time you can use different methods. Have you ever read the book hi-fidelity by Nick Hornby. This guy is passionate about sorting his vinyl. It’s worth a read.

Anyway I’m not going to re-invent the wheel here as I have found someone else who has put together a great article with ten ways of organising your vinyl collection. Andrew Winistorfer of Vinyl Please has some pretty wacky ideas on how it can be done even sorting them by spine colour, but how do you sort yours?

Check out Andrew Winistorfer’s article here.

My personal preference is to organise firstly by genre (punk, soul, Indie etc). Then alphabetically by last name and band name. Within each artist I organise chronologically. Organising your vinyl collection into genre might even through out a few questions. Where does Punk become, Indie, or Heavy Metal where does jazz become rock? This will all come down to personal opinion! I don’t want to start any arguments here!

Another question is if you are then placing on a shelf do you organise left to right or right to left? Do you organise your 7″ singles in a different way from your LP’s? The options are endless.

If organising your vinyl is the last thing you want to do and you are looking to sell your collection click here and get in touch. P.S I actually prefer looking through unsorted vinyl, it’s great to get a complete mix with surprises throughout!
